RECYCLING PROGRAM

In the last issue of the Villa Views the Board asked for feedback regarding the termination of the use of the large reusable plastic bags for recycling. As a result of this consultation, the Board concluded that the vast majority of owners are in favour of discontinuing their use. As a result, at the April Board meeting a motion was passed confirming the discontinuation of the use of the reusable bags and making each owner responsible for purchasing CLEAR plastic bags for the purpose of recycling. These bags would not be reused but would be recycled along with their contents. These bags can be purchased at grocery stores and home renovation centres. We do still have some of the reusable bags left, so, if anyone wishes to continue using them until our supply is gone, they can be picked up at Unit 19, Unit 118 or Unit 207.

Preventative Maintenance Inspection Report

Thank you to each and every one for taking the time to fill out the Preventative Maintenance Inspection report. Your Board is now in the process of summarizing the reports to determine the areas that require maintenance attention. The Board will then determine the primary areas of need and begin the process of making arrangements to make the necessary repairs. Of course one has to realize that not all of the areas of need can be addressed immediately, as availability of repair agents and budgets available have to be taken into consideration. The maintenance items will be dealt on a priority ‘must need fix ‘basis to‘ it would be nice to get fixed ‘ basis.

Community and Social Events

With the rapid onset of summer-like weather we are all looking forward to the long warm season ahead. It is not too early to consider a location for our annual outdoor picnic and social event in August. If you would be willing to have the event at your unit this year please contact Allan either by telephone or by email. We have some supplies, equipment and advice to share with you that will contribute to the party’s success. New residents please note:  this is an outdoor event and the only space that guests may occupy is your garage where the food will be served up.

Villa Volunteers

Do you need your flower beds weeded while recovering from knee replacement surgery?   Do you need a ride to a doctor’s appointment?  Do you need help turning on (or off) the irrigation water supply?  Would you like to get to know your neighbours better?

Several residents of the Villas have offered to help other residents with tasks not handled by contractors or medical professionals.  From time to time each of us requires support from others and sometimes it is not possible for families to provide that support.   We are setting up a list of Villa Volunteers who would be willing to help each other when the need arises.  If you would be willing to help a neighbour please contact Allan describing what you would be willing to help with.  Please don’t limit yourself to the tasks I’ve mentioned above.   If you’re away part of the year please don’t hesitate to sign-up because your assistance would be appreciated whenever you’re here.  If you have a task that you require help with also contact Allan to connect with a volunteer.

Fire Safety Features from the Block Watch

1.  There should be working smoke detectors on each level of your home. They shold be tested monthly.

2.  Have you made a fire emergency escape route plan? You should have 2 ways to exit your home quickly in the event of a fire. Check that all doors and windows in the escape route can be easily opened and are clear of obstructions.

3.  Have a phone near your bed in case you need help.

4.  If you smoke, use large, deep ashtrays, and never smoke when drowsy or in bed.

5.  Be sure ashes are out before placing them in garbage containers.

6.  Check furnace equipment yearly.

7.  Do not store combustibles near the furnace or heaters

8.  Excessive storage can be a fuel for a fire.

9.  Have adequate fire extinguishers and check them yearly. It is suggested that you have a fire extinguisher on each level of your home and one in the garage. The Calgary Fire Department or fire extinguisher suppliers can recommend the best size and type(s) for home use.

10.  Replace cracked or worn electrical cords.

11.  Do not overload electrical outlets.

12.  Don’t run wires under rugs.

13.  Ensure that curtains or towels are not hanging over stoves or lamps.

14.  Allow air space around televisions, stereos, and other AV equipment to prevent overheating.

15.  Locate portable heaters away from combustibles, doorways, and high traffic areas.

16.  Unplug portable heaters when not in use.

17.  If you must leave the kitchen while cooking, take a spoon, pot-holder, or other kitchen utensil with you as a reminder to turn off the stove.

18.  Always have a potholder or oven mitt and a pot lid handy while cooking on top of the stove.

19.  If fire breaks out in a pan, put a lid on the pan and turn off the heat.

20.  Heat cooking oils gradually. Use extra caution when deep-frying.

21.  Never cook while wearing lose clothing. You could become a human torch if fire breaks out.

22.  Keep oven and stove clean to prevent cooking fires.

23.  Use appliances with an automatic shut-off.

24.  When using barbecues, place them as far from the siding as possible.

25.  Turn off propane tanks or gas lines to barbecues when not in use.
